Barbados was uninhabited when first settled by the British in 1627. More colonists came to develop sugar plantations, bringing slaves from Africa to work on the plantations. The country remained under British control until it became independent in 1966, and has since been stable and democratic. Barbados is one of the most prosperous countries in the Caribbean region. Its economy has benefited from strong institutions and social and political stability. Once dependent on sugar production, Barbados’ economy today is based on tourism and financial services.
